NATIONAL FINALE OF PADDLE POP YOUNG BUILDERS AWARD SEES STUDENTS CREATING MALAYSIA-THEMED RECYCLED ROBOT STRUCTURES

20 teams from primary schools across Malaysia compete to create life-sized robot structures made from used and recyclable materials

A three-day national finale event brought together 20 shortlisted primary school teams from across Malaysia to create eco structures with a green theme at the annual Paddle Pop Young Builders Award 2017. The Paddle Pop Young Builders Award in collaboration with the Ministry of Education Malaysia, is an annual national award competition promoting environmental awareness as students design and build creative structures made from used and recyclable materials.
In conjunction with Malaysia’s 60th National Day, students in teams of four incorporated local elements of Malaysia and of the participant’s respective states into the designs of their chosen structures.
Paddle Pop Young Builders Award 2017 saw SK Peramu Jaya from Pahang emerge victorious, while SK Bukit Rokan Utara (F) from Negeri Sembilan came in second place followed by SK Stella Maris (M) from Perlis. This years’ competition drew 752 entries from a total of 195 schools.

Additionally, this year’s competition gave away three prizes for the following special categories, ‘Most Resourceful Team’, ‘Best Teamwork’ and ‘Most Creative’ won by SK Durian Mas 1 from Terengganu, SK Kepala Batas (2) from Kedah and SJK(C) Chung Hwa from Pahang respectively.

“This year, we reached out to 20% more primary schools and an impressive 80% more students compared to the previous year. Together with an increased participation from schools, we also saw a much more competitive finale. Our esteemed judge and famed local artist, Professor Jalaini was truly impressed with the creativity and effort that was put into the entries this year, proving that Paddle Pop is successfully capturing the interest of the students with regards to preserving our environment,” said Shiv Sahgal, Marketing Director Foods & Refreshment, Unilever (Malaysia) Holdings Sdn Bhd.

“We are fully invested and committed to encourage the future leaders of Malaysia to preserve and build a greener tomorrow through reusing, repurposing and recycling,” he added.
The Paddle Pop Young Builders Award 2017 themed “Unity for a Greener Future” is a platform to educate primary school students on the various materials that can be reused, repurposed and recycled in fun and innovative ways.
The finale event was graced and officiated by Dato P. Kamalanathan, Deputy Minister of Education 1, and Shiv Sahgal, Marketing Director Foods & Refreshment, Unilever (Malaysia) Holdings Sdn Bhd.

“I am very proud that Paddle Pop Young Builders Award not only educates students to cultivate eco-friendly habits, but also encourages them to celebrate unity and their love for the country. I hope that this collaboration will be continued in the coming years to greatly benefit the future generation,” he added.  

Paddle Pop Young Builders Award 2017 which was opened to all primary school students in years 4, 5 and 6 sought to find the most creatively crafted life-size robot structure fully made from used and recyclable materials that also promotes the message that a greener future is vital. This year participants were required to build a robot with everyday waste materials where the robot’s purpose is to monitor and keep the school environment green in a fun and innovative way.

To add on to the innovation and creativity elements, the students were treated to an exciting field trip to Petrosains during the three-day finale event.  

At the finale, the 20 creative structures were judged by head judge, Associate Professor Jalaini Abu Hassan from Faculty of Arts and Design, Universiti Teknologi MARA, a representative each from the Ministry of Education and Unilever Malaysia.

The main prize is RM6,000 cash to the winning school, 3 Day/2 Night LEGOLAND® Malaysia Resort Family Vacation which includes a travel voucher worth RM500, combo admission tickets and hotel arrangement for each of the four participants in the team and a certificate of participation each. The two consolation prizes include RM2,000 cash to the school, and LEGOLAND® Malaysia Resort combo admission tickets for each team member.
The Paddle Pop Young Builders Award programme is part of the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan (USLP) to make sustainable living more commonplace.  USLP aims to remove environmental footprint from its growth and increase positive social impact. This includes addressing consumers’ health and wellbeing by improving nutrition. Paddle Pop ice cream variants are formulated to meet the nutritional criteria and abide by healthy nutritional guidelines specifically for calories, saturated fats and sugar. Through the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan (USLP) it is assured that the Paddle Pop kids ice cream range contain no more than 110kcal per serving, 3g saturated fat per serving and 20g of added sugar per 100g. 

“As an iconic brand that has been a part of many kids’ childhood, Paddle Pop ice cream variants have been formulated to make it a healthier choice for kids today,” added Shiv Sahgal.
