URGENCY IN RAISING AWARENESS OF KIDNEY DISEASE
In conjunction of World Kidney Day (WKD)
2018, National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia’s (NKF) Open Day took place today at
the NKF – BERJAYA Resource Centre.
The day’s programme kicked off with a
Bollywood Fitness Dance instructed by Mr Kirenjit Singh, the Bhangra Dance
Master who was formerly a Fitness Manager for Celebrity Fitness. Free health
screening was provided for public to keep track of their blood pressure, blood
glucose, blood cholesterol level with counselling given by NKF’s health
professionals. An organ donation booth was set up to encourage the public to
pledge to donate their organs, which will go a long way in lending a new lease
of life for people in dire need for organ transplants, including kidney
transplants.
“In Malaysia, there is an increase of
6,000 new cases of patients who are diagnosed with kidney failure every year.
This clearly indicates that there is an urgent need to increase public
awareness on personal health, especially on diseases related to end stage renal
disease (ESRD),” said Chua Hong Wee, CEO of NKF.
“Celebrated globally on the second Thursday
in March, this year’s World Kidney Day coincides with International Women’s Day.
As such, we would like to raise awareness of preventive measures in avoiding
kidney disease, especially in women. We also added the Bollywood Fitness Dance
as a new activity this year. Jointly organised by the Ministry of Health,
Malaysian Society of Nephrology and National Kidney Foundation, this initiative
will be held in various cities throughout Malaysia, including Johor, Seberang
Prai, Sungai Petani and Alor Setar,” he added.
A health talk on the importance of
annual medical check-up was conducted by Mr Nizam bin Yusof, Consultancy Manager
of Medi Diastika Sdn Bhd to encourage members of public to take charge of their
own health, as determining of bodily functions can help to identify any
abnormalities or disease before they can worsen, display symptoms, and pose a
significant risk.
With the theme of WKD being ‘Include,
Value, Empower’ this year, Dr Nor Fadhlina Binti Zakaria from Faculty of
Medicine and Health Sciences, University Putra Malaysia has shared the
importance of women’s health and specifically their kidney health during the health
talk on ‘Supplements, Women, and Kidneys Health’.
