SETAPAK CENTRAL’S FIRST BLOOM & GROW EVENT PROMOTES LOCAL COMMUNITY’S LOVE FOR GARDENING

Setapak Central, the family friendly neighbourhood mall located along Jalan Genting Klang, marked its first plant event, themed “Bloom & Grow” from 5 till 8 July, 2018. The event saw plant experts, societies, and gardening solutions providers exhibiting their products and services through a plant bazaar to cater to the growing interest of urban gardening in the local community.

“As a community mall, we aim to cultivate and support the local community’s enthusiasm for urban gardening. Besides the plant bazaar, we also scheduled demonstrations by plant and soil experts for the public to participate over the weekend. We are happy with the interest we receive from the participating vendors and we might consider turning this into an annual event,” commented Tan Thiam Sing, Centre Manager, Setapak Central.

Also present at the launch event was Dr Christopher Teh Boon Sung, soil scientist and senior lecturer at Universiti Putra Malaysia, as he shared helpful advice on the various signs of plant problems such as leaf drop, flower abortion, fruit abortion and finding the right potting mix for different types of plants. He was joined by the “Plant Doctor”, Mr Francis Chuah Teong Kah from Urban Farm Tech, who hosted an interactive session on designing and maintaining aquaponics, a system that combines conventional aquaculture and hydroponics in a symbiotic environment.

Media members participated on a tour to the booths where vendors displayed their expertise. Serbajadi Gardening shared knowledge on how to grow your own vegetable and container gardening while Terra and Copper Works drew attention by demonstrating the terrarium craft. The Malaysian Bonsai & Suseki Society, specialists in the art of growing miniature trees shared their passion for this intricate cultivation and care taking tips of bonsai plants.

Also present at the plant bazaar was, Plant & Pot that had an exciting range of indoor and outdoor greens. Visitors picked up on the good deals in quality garden fertilisers, potting mix, seeds and other gardening products.

“The community living around Setapak Central are home owners, families and students and we felt that promoting gardening to reduce the stresses of city living and constant studying would be ideal. Hence, we searched and brought in experts in their fields to get gardening or home plant enthusiasts excited and equipped with knowledge to make their gardens thrive,” Tan Thiam Sing added.
