KidZania CongreZZ 2017 Gives Underprivileged Kids a Sporting Chance
Caring
Project highlights benefits of sports and games for children
KidZania CongreZZ 2017 organised its
annual Caring Project which brought the spirit of unity alive in true Malaysian
style by hosting a Sports Day event for the children of Lighthouse Children Welfare Home (Lighthouse). Held at
Sports Planet Kota Damansara, both KidZania CongreZZ members and the children teamed
up to participate in a variety of sports, games and activities.
A Corporate Social Responsibility effort by the
CongreZZ members of KidZania Kuala Lumpur, this year, the Caring Project introduced
activities from its variable programme KidZania SportZ 2017 in an effort to
promote the spirit of sportsmanship and the thrill of healthy competition.
“The Kidzania SportZ 2017 programme was very popular
among kids at KidZania Kuala Lumpur, and we realised that there are many more kids
who wouldn’t have been able to enjoy that, especially the underprivileged, so
we decided to bring the programme to them instead,” said eight-year-old
CongreZZ kid, Joshua Zhakaria.
“Through the Caring Project,
KidZania CongreZZ members are given the responsibility to research, plan and
organise a charitable initiative, which teaches them about time and project
management. In addition, it instils the importance of helping
others and contributing their skills and time to those less fortunate than they
are,” said Shahrul Nizar Ahmad, Mayor of KidZania Kuala
Lumpur.
“I am very proud of the
CongreZZ kids to have chosen ‘sports’ for this year’s Caring Project. Personal
experience shows that when we teach kids in a classroom, only a part of the
information sticks, but introduce sports or an activity and you suddenly have
yourself an alert and participative audience,” he continued.
The CongreZZ members and
children from Lighthouse enjoyed a fun-filled day of
Zumba, CrossFit, futsal and dodgeball sessions. Additional activities such as
mini golf, archery, basketball and mini table tennis were also popular and the
day came to a close with an upbeat and energetic send-off in the form of
special performances by the CongreZZ members and KidZania Kuala Lumpur Artistic
Team.
KidZania CongreZZ is a group of 20 children, from 7
to 12 years old, elected annually to govern KidZania Kuala Lumpur and providing input in
decision-making processes, gathering every quarter to discuss topics that will
benefit kids such as media, entertainment, education and literature, besides
planning for events and initiatives such as the annual Caring Project for
disadvantaged communities.
Over the past two years,
previous CongreZZ members had hosted and visited with children from two
different homes, organised a Mini Charity Concert and arranged an outreach
session at an Orang Asli community where children were able to mingle and learn
from each other about their different lifestyles.
